“The fact that I got chosen from our state to go over there was pretty freaking awesome,” Miss DeLure said.

“I was in awe of how much time and money these girls [from the eastern states] put into costumes and props.”

Ms DeLure said most competitors had personal hair and makeup artists and their costumes made for them.

“I’m here using my sewing machine, and doing my hair and makeup,” she said.

“It just makes me want to make my costumes and make my props even better than they have been.”

The 25-year-old has been dancing with Sugar Blue Burlesque for six months. For 18 months before that she had been taking their classes – which are open to the public.

Ms DeLure said burlesque dancing was about making sure the audience always had a smile on their face.

“It’s not only about how many clothes you take off,” she said.

“It’s about how you do it and showing who you are – not being afraid to go to the extremes or try something different.”

Ms DeLure will be teaching a Burlesque class at the end of the year.
