Oliver Cooksey, the first customer to get his new iPhone 7 in Perth

The new iPhone 7 has been released this morning in Perth, but to a smaller crowd than the last iPhone.

More than 100 people lined up outside the Perth Apple store for the release of the iPhone 6 in 2014, but the first customer in line this morning estimated there were only about 50 people at the store when it opened today.

Oliver Cooksey said he was the first customer to purchase the new iPhone 7 in Perth, waiting about 30 minutes in a special line for customers who had pre-ordered it.

The most controversial feature of the new iPhone was the lack of a headphone jack, but Mr Cooksey said it wasn’t a big issue for him. He also said some of the new features were attractive.

“I only have one device that needs it [headphones] and I’ll just keep the adapter on that headset,” Mr Cooksey said.

“The other devices I have are wireless or use the lightning port already.”

A Perth Apple employee said people desperate to get their hands on the new model had been waiting outside the store since 10 pm last night.

On Thursday night, the iPhone 7 Plus and the iPhone 7 pre-ordered models sold out in black.

Clarence Chuah from technology company Tech Brain said the smaller crowd at the Apple store this year was’t necessarily because fewer people wanted the new phone. He said many people now pre-ordered it to avoid lining up.

And the iPhone 7 did have some attractive features.

“People want to have better battery quality and better camera when they buy a new phone,” Mr Chuah said.
