Armadale golf delay

The re-opening of Armadale Golf Course, slated for last month, has been delayed as a revamp that started in June last year runs overtime.

The nine-hole golf course, just off Tonkin Highway, is undergoing a $1 million upgrade.

The revamp was prompted by various faults that had plagued the course for some years.

Armadale Mayor Henry Zelones said one of those faults was a failing reticulation system.

“[Council] officers reported that the then managers of the golf course could not guarantee maintenance of the course to a reasonable playing standard,” Mr Zelones said.

Reopening the golf course was scheduled for March this year.

But this has been pushed back to early November.

Mr Zelones said the delay was due to contractors and future managers wanting the course to open in the best possible condition.

He said the council felt it would be best to give the fairways and greens the chance of healthy grass growth, during the winter months.

Therefore it would be beneficial to launch the reopening in spring, as most of the seasonal club competitions are scheduled for after winter.

Armadale resident William Brookes said he occasionally took his children down to the golf course, and is awaiting the reopening.

“The upgrade will be beneficial to the Armadale community as it will not only draw more people from other suburbs but it also will allow people who are already part of the community to come together and celebrate this upgrade,” Mr Brookes enthusiastically added.

During reconstruction, the City of Armadale is urging regular patrons to use other golf courses in Canning, Gosnells, Serpentine and Araluen.
